Joseph Haydn's official duties as Kapellmeister in Eszterháza included the musical organization of the Opera Company and the provision of music for theatrical performances. The seventh episode of the highly acclaimed Haydn 2032 project on ALPHA classics is dedicated to the latter aspect. She presents some works that have long been suspected of being drama music arranged into symphonies. Die at about the same time, namely 1776 created instrumental interludes from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's acting music to Von Gebler's heroic Drama Thamos, König in Egypt KV 345 form the perfect complement to this.

Under the title Gli impresari, the Impresarios i.e. the directors of Theater Ensembles, hired by Nicholas I prince Esterházy to host in his opera this CD gathers together some of the orchestral works associated by Joseph Haydn, reflecting their origin and their reception; they were originally considered Theater music, which before its metamorphosis into symphonies(...). In the period from 1772, when Karl Wahr was responsible for the summer theatre program in Esterháza, the culmination of the multidisciplinary cooperation between the court music under the direction of Haydn and externally engaged companies took place. (... At the end of 1775 and the beginning of 1776, when Joseph Haydn turned his music for Collé's comedy into a symphony for concert performances, Karl Wahr celebrated great success with his theater entertainments in the ballroom of the Salzburg theater. There was on 3. January 1776 Thamos, king of Egypt, staged a heroic drama, the choirs, such as music, scientists believe, were composed by none other than Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart; for this Salzburg performance, he also composed four instrumental entrakte (for this CD) as well as a melodrama and A don Giovanni-esque descent into hell.
