Last year Toccata Classics released the first of two CDs of piano music by the Edinburgh composer Charles O’Brien (1882–1968). The O’Brien rediscovery continues with his most important work, his only symphony.
O’Brien’s Symphony in F minor (1922) is a full-scale Romantic score in the tradition of Mendelssohn and Brahms, powerful and lyrical by turn. His music also shows an awareness of Elgar, but it has an individual Scottish quality of its own. It is coupled here with his heartening, Walter Scott-inspired overture Ellangowan, resplendent with a big Scottish tune which lingers in the memory.
Paul Mann is a regular guest-conductor with many orchestras throughout Europe, the USA, Australia, and the Far East. One of his best-known collaborations was with the London Symphony Orchestra and the legendary rock group Deep Purple in two widely acclaimed performances of Jon Lord’s Concerto for Group and Orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall. He is making a series of recordings for Toccata Classics. The Liepāja Symphony Orchestra, founded in 1881, is the oldest symphonic ensemble in the Baltic States and holds a special place in the national cultural life of Latvia, where it has the status of national orchestra. This is the second of a series of recordings with Paul Mann conducting the Liepāja Symphony Orchestra on Toccata Classics. The first featured the orchestral music of Lef Solberg.

04. Berceuse
05. Scottish Scenes, Op. 17 (Version for Orchestra): I. Moorland
06. Scottish Scenes, Op. 17 (Version for Orchestra): II. Voices in the Glen
07. Scottish Scenes, Op. 17 (Version for Orchestra): III. Harvest Home

The rediscovery of the music of the Edinburgh composer Charles O’Brien (1882–1968) continues with this second CD of his orchestral music. The disc opens with two expansive ‘concert overtures’, the bright, Schumannesque To Spring and dark, Lisztian The Minstrel’s Curse – symphonic poems in all but name.
Two contrasting and charming miniatures from O’Brien’s youth are then followed by a colourful evocation of Scottish life, in a suite consisting of a tone-poem, an heroic elegy and a dancing finale.
Toccata Classics has already released O’Brien’s complete piano music on two CDs, and the first of what will be three of the complete orchestral music, with O’Brien’s only symphony. Of it MusicWeb International commented: ‘One or two of the string phrases remind the listener of Elgar […] there’s a strong vein of dance music running through this work. […] beautifully played and paced, and finely recorded as well, and is thus shown to its best advantage. As O’Brien’s only symphony it’s a worthy discovery for admirers of British music, who will await volume two with enthusiasm’.

01. Ellangowan Concert Overture, Op. 10
02. Waltz Suite, Op. 26: I. Tendresse
03. Waltz Suite, Op. 26: II. Joie de vivre
04. Waltz Suite, Op. 26: III. Jeunesse
05. Waltz Suite, Op. 26: IV. Extase
06. Suite humoristique, Op. 8: I. Marche fantastique
07. Suite humoristique, Op. 8: II. Au théâtre
08. Suite humoristique, Op. 8: III. Barcarolle
09. Suite humoristique, Op. 8: IV. Danse bohémienne

The rediscovery of the music of the Edinburgh composer Charles O’Brien (1882–1968) continues with this third CD of his orchestral music. The explicitly Scottish Ellangowan Overture contrasts splendid Caledonian vistas with some wonderfully catchy tunes, and in the two suites O’Brien skilfully combines a naturally symphonic voice with an unexpected sense of fun.
