A native of Argentina, Pablo Ortiz is a name which will be less than familiar with most music fans, and the eclectic nature of the present collection, with its echoes of Gregorian Chant, 16th century polyphony and tango is sure to provide a valuable introduction to Pablo Ortiz’s work. Ortiz is a professor of composition at the University of California, Davis, and his prizes and commissions include those from the Fromm Music Foundation in 1992, a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1993, and the Charles Ives Fellowship from the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1996. One of his Motets was recorded as part of The Lost City: Lamentations Through the Ages (Naxos 8573078), described as ‘an album any sacred choral fan will cherish’ by the American Record Guide.
