In the unlikely event that any of Joyce DiDonato's exciting recordings for Erato have slipped by unnoticed, the label has helpfully organized this ample collection, partly as an introduction to this critically acclaimed mezzo-soprano, and partly as a reminder to fans of just how much she has recorded. This package requires two CDs to sample her repertoire, which includes dramatic roles in operas by Claudio Monteverdi, George Frederick Handel, Antonio Vivaldi, and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, as well as less familiar but significant composers as Giovanni Porta, Giuseppe Maria Orlandini, and Geminiano Giacomelli. Throughout, DiDonato demonstrates both her virtuosic vocal abilities and her bold characterizations. She is accompanied by Alan Curtis and Il Complesso Barocco, Christophe Rousset and Les Talens Lyriques, Emmanuelle Haïm and Le Concert d'Astrée, Fabio Biondi and Europa Galante, and Kazushi Ono and the Orchestre de l'Opéra National de Lyon, so historically informed performance styles are sampled as well. If there's a good place to start exploring DiDonato's extraordinary body of work, this collection must be it.
