NYC’s Impatience get the very best out of french troubadour Tryphème, who comes into her own with a bouquet of literate, gothic synth-pop ballads and club wallflowers RIYL Oï Les Ox, Mark Fisher, Garbage, Cranes, Hyperdawn, a.s.o. ‘Odd Balade’ marks a striking step-up from Tryphème’s origins in braindance-adjacent synth-pop for CPU toward a more full-bodied, chimeric form of songwriting steeped in retro-futurist and hauntological themes. Blessed with a naturally poetic, Gallic melancholy and tinted with a Northern UK appreciation of gloomy beauty, her current sound takes what it needs from myriad forms of baroque and leftfield electronic pop, stirs in extra musical influence from the writings of Allen Ginsberg and Mark Fisher, and the eerie atmosphere of Chars, a village in Brittany, to produce an album that wins both on its immediacy and the sort of detailed arrangements that will snag the imagination. Where Tryphème’s run of albums from 2017’s ‘Online Dating’ to the 2020 self-release of ‘To Pick Musics Up?’ were already impressive, the four year break has clearly been spent pruning and cultivating her sound into fresh and finessed styles of songcraft. From goth-pop hinting at Strawberry Switchblade via Cocteau Twins in ‘Strawberry Jam Sucker’, to the exquisite frisson of ephemeral references in ‘Heavy Blossom’ at its core, and sprawling outward into the ‘80s synth-pop ballideering of ‘Sandy Family’, Jonnine-esque downbeat gems ‘Mariner on Shore’ and the medieval waltz of ‘Clio’, or the dancefloor succour of ‘Nightingale’, there’s a play of light and magic at every glance. Pop connoisseurs - must check.
