Saxophonist David Borgo constantly varies the instrumentation during his 13 originals on this CD with the performances including an unaccompanied solo on chalumeau, seven duets with drums, percussion or piano, three trios (including two that are comprised of three saxophones), a quartet and a quintet. Borgo, who plays eight songs on tenor, two apiece on soprano and alto, and the one on claumeau (plus doubling on whistles during two numbers), also alternates his style a bit depending on the situation, ranging from quite free ("Sync") to melodic, while always being explorative. The constant variety adds to the value of this release and keeps listeners constantly guessing what is coming up next. Highlights include the free bop quartet playing on a lengthy "On the Five," trombonist George Lewis during "Oddity," the tenor-piano duet with Anthony Davis on "Miko" (with Borgo hinting at John Coltrane) and the bluish "Beantown Bounce."
