In 1948, the Amadeus Quartet, one of the most extraordinary string quartets of the post-war period, was founded. For over 40 years, Norbert Brainin (1st violin), Siegmund Nissel (2nd violin), Peter Schidlof (viola) and Martin Lovett (violoncello) developed an extensive repertoire of classical and romantic works.
These recordings of Ludwig van Beethoven's string quartets were made between 1959 and 1961.
