Artificial Horizon was Forever Einstein's first album. Even though most of the elements of the band's sound are present, this first effort feels a bit below average and alien. C.W. Vrtacek, as a composer, and the band itself were still trying things out in search of their identity. In some tunes, like the opening track "A Long Time Ago People Decided to Live on the Earth," piano replaces the guitar, something that would not happen again after this album. The stylistic range covered is also a bit wider, although it doesn't feel like the band has more freedom but like it has less focus. "Asian Women Desire Correspondence" has a strong Doctor Nerve color. But the surf influence that will become something of a trademark for Forever Einstein is featured on tracks like "Electric Pants," as is its unmatched art for short witty rock numbers with "The World Before Elvis: The Sequel." Not to forget Vrtacek's odd song titles ("The Iron Boot of Stupidity Will March Across Your Face"). Artificial Horizon remains a first effort, interesting but still a little crude. The members of Forever Einstein will quickly refine their art for their next release, Opportunity Crosses the Bridge.~François Couture
