Who was Sig.r Canaby? And why did the great Parisian publishers Le Clerc & Boivin, in 1741, decide to publish his Sonatas for Transverse Flute and Bass, thus immortalising the blurry figure of this nowadays obscure musician among those of fundamental late Baroque composers such as Leclair, Rameau or Blavet?
Of uncertain provenance (possibly Alsatian, although the musicologist Franjo Ksaver Kuhač believes him to be of Croatian origin) Martin Friedrich - or even Matthias Franciscus, as indicated in some sources - was the forefather of the Cannabich dynasty, a family that profoundly influenced Germanic musical culture over three generations and throughout the 18th century. Yet very little is known of his life: born probably around 1690, we find the first traces of his work around 1706 in Rastatt, as a musician in the service of Ludwig Wilhelm, Margrave of Baden-Baden.
