In early 2020, following a rapid—and unexpected—spike in TikTok success, Canadian noise-pop duo Black Dresses, aka Devi McCallion and Ada Rook, announced their plans to lay the project to rest. (I’ve detailed their reasoning behind that decision elsewhere, but in a nutshell, blame it on obsessive fans with no understanding of boundaries.) When they suddenly resurfaced the following year with Forever In Your Heart, an album regarded by many as their opus, I suspected they’d backtracked; when they dropped the follow-up, Forget Your Own Face, thirteen months later, I outright assumed it. This week, I’ve got good news and bad news: the good news is that Black Dresses are back with, LAUGHINGFISH another stellar, surprise-released LP; the bad news is that they’re officially donezo, as Rook said on Twitter: “This is the last one.” If you’ve yet to try Black Dresses’ chromed-out bubblegum, do yourself and change that this time around: from Nine Inch Nails-y industrial pop (“CAT CUP”) to brassy noise rock (“PURE REALITY”), to trip-hop-tinged screamo (“GOOD THINGS HAPPEN”), there’s never a dull moment on LAUGHINGFISH. If this is indeed the duo’s concluding work, then it’s one hell of a capstone. If it’s not, then we should consider ourselves immensely lucky indeed.
