“Fistful of Metal”, the debut album by Anthrax, is a raw and energetic entry into the early speed/thrash metal scene. The album is often overlooked due to the removal of original singer Neil Turbin, but it remains an important piece of early speed/thrash metal history.

The album is characterized by its raw presentation and less adventurous style. The songwriting is more straightforward than on their late 80s releases and relies mostly on its main riffs to carry the songs. Neil Turbin’s energetic and electric performance is a highlight, with his raw talent being unmistakable.

The album also showcases the talents of drummer Charlie Benante and bassist Danny Lilker. Benante’s solid sense of rhythm and ability to accent his playing is a standout, while Lilker’s balanced mix is highlighted nicely throughout the album.

Despite its raw and unrefined nature, “Fistful of Metal” is considered one of Anthrax’s very best albums. It may not be the most complex album and doesn’t try to break through too many boundaries, but it makes up for this with rigid consistency.

In conclusion, “Fistful of Metal” is a decent but not great album, nowhere near the quality of other debut gems like Show No Mercy or War And Pain. However, it’s a Judas Priest-worshipping mess that walks an unsteady Speed Metal path with more enthusiasm than skill. It’s aged dreadfully, although you can hear the roots of the band’s later sound; especially in the guitars and drums.
