Dick’s Den is a magical place where veteran drinkers, freshly legal OSU students, and everyone in between comes together for cheap libations, and live jazz. Where a normal dive might have touchtunes, a jukebox, or karaoke for musical entertainment, Dick’s Den has Columbus’ finest working jazz musicians playing their asses off from 10-2am most nights. It’s THE place for cats to hang if you want to ingratiate yourself into the local scene. After being a frequent patron, watching in admiration as my teachers and mentors tore apart jazz standards, covers, and original compositions, I finally got my chance to lead a group there in the spring of 2014. Now, 10 years later, with countless projects, late nights, and unforgettable musical moments under my belt, I’m thrilled to share with you a snapshot of what a late night set at Dick’s sounds like. My trio took on the ambitious job of playing the entire “Thrust” album by Herbie Hancock’s Headhunters in a total stripped down format. Chase Potter, my bassist, casually mentioned he would be recording it, and I’m sure grateful he did. I’m also indebted to Matthiessen Nisch Quan, a dear friend who accompanied me on my first Dick’s Den gig. Here’s to many more, fellas. Special thanks to Tim, Dean, Aaron, Krista, and everyone else behind the bar for maintaining a true landmark Columbus institution.
