Along with the other Who's Who album which was simply called Wynton Marsalis, this recording features some of the trumpeter's earliest recordings although in reality it is a live performance by Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. At the time the drummer/leader had a particularly strong sextet with altoist Bobby Watson, Billy Pierce on tenor, pianist James Williams and bassist Charles Fambrough. Together with the trumpeter (who was then not quite 19), the group performs a particularly strong set highlighted by "One by One," "My Funny Valentine" (Marsalis's feature) and "ETA." It is interesting to note that his main influence at the beginning of his career was Freddie Hubbard, not Miles Davis. Both of the Who's Who albums contain excellent music.~Scott Yanow
