Besides "love, sweet, love," what the world needs now, at least as of this disc's release in 2002, is a comprehensive domestic multi-label Jackie DeShannon collection with extensive liner notes and a complete discography. Unfortunately, this 12-track quickie isn't it. Even though it's available at a bargain price, touches on the singer/songwriter's obvious milestones, and is a reasonable place to start, the abbreviated playing time and reliance only on 1963-1970 Liberty tracks now owned by Capitol make for a frustratingly limited selection. It's especially aggravating because EMI's 30-cut What the World Needs Now...: The Definitive Collection compilation from 1994 did the job so much better, although as of this album's appearance it was regrettably out of print. In any case, if you only require radio hits like "What the World Needs Now Is Love," "When You Walk in the Room," and "Needles and Pins" along with the occasional oddity like DeShannon's version of the the Band's "The Weight" and the Brit-pop-styled "Brighton Hill," this'll do just fine. But DeShannon was far too talented, especially as a songwriter and distinctive singer, to be represented by a skimpy compilation such as this. As an artist who successfully dabbled in country, pop, '60s girl group, and even introspective singer/songwriter fare, she deserves a far more thorough career overview.
