As compilations go, this 69-minute, 22-track selection of recordings by Dick Haymes scores points for breadth, if not depth. Haymes began as a band singer, then was one of the most popular solo singers of the second half of the 1940s. Starting things off here is "I'll Get By (As Long As I Have You)," and his biggest hit as a band singer, recorded with Harry James and His Orchestra and licensed from Columbia Records. Later on come three tracks licensed from Capitol Records and drawn from his commercially negligent 1950s recordings. But the bulk of the set is drawn from his considerable cache of hit records for Decca. Both alone and in duets with Helen Forrest, Haymes reached the Top Ten 27 times between 1943 and 1950, and the 12 Top Ten hits selected here include such smashes as the title song, "Little White Lies," and "Long Ago (And Far Away)." Inexplicably, however, there are also five non-hits, while major records like "It Can't Be Wrong" and "Maybe It's Because" are missing. Haymes fans may applaud the diversity, but they will miss a lot of favorites. (The album has no annotations.)~William Ruhlmann
