Susan O’Neil - Lead Vocalist... O’Neil has been singing in popular Louisville watering holes since 1978 when she joined a little rock group called “Just Foolin”. From there she played with another popular group, Kessler’s Friends. Susan founded Da Mudcats with Jim Rosen in 1986 and spent the subsequent 7 years traveling and playing out her blues jones. While with Da Mudcats, she shared the stage with blues royalty such as Koko Taylor, Buddy Guy, Eddie Clearwater and Bo Diddley. She is the featured vocalist on Da Mudcats self-titled first release and has done session work for many other Louisville artists. After leaving Da Mudcats, she formed Susan O’Neil and the Blues Hounds who played locally for another 8 years.

Susan’s music career has taken her many places and afforded her the pleasure of doing radio shows such as WFPK’s Live Lunch (twice), and Homefront, another WFPK nationally syndicated radio show. She and the Blue Seville also performed on a Waterfront Wednesday event the summer of 2003. Music critic Jeffrey Lee Puckett has described her as “simultaneous hard edged and honey sweet - is a classic”. WFPK’s Scott Mullins says “O’Neil’s vocals can run the gamut from bone crunching power to spine tingling soulfullness”. Local writer/music critic Marty Rosen says “O’Neil has a vibrant alto voice that can raise the roof in the best tradition of blues shouting and can communicate the poignant essence of slow soulful tunes”.

Susan was honored to receive the Sylvester Weaver Award in 2003, which is given each year by the KYANA Blues Society. The award honors one person annually for Preservation, Performance and Perpetuating the Blues.
