DALLAS — Those sunny, carefree tunes we’ve come to know from The O’s are back — the two hard-working musicians are finally releasing a third full-length titled Thunderdog. It’s been two years since we’ve heard anything from the Dallas duo. The digital release comes out on April 16 and encompasses what The O’s do best: pair strenuous banjo and acoustic guitar solos with well-manicured harmonies that only time could finesse. Punch5 Records produced the album — the band’s very own record label founded earlier this year. With the freedom to do it their way, the band members took their time writing and recording the album while on the road.

The wait was worth it: Thunderdog leaves no bluegrass instrument behind, upholding the trademark sound they’re known for. They conquer a bundle of instruments at once, including banjo, lap steel guitar, kick drum and harmonica, making their live show a fun sight to see. “Cicerone” bottles that magic with a rambling harmonica, spot-on harmonies, and clapping and yelling that’ll make you think you’re onstage. The album’s first single, “Outlaw”, ushers in a floorboard stomp from Taylor Young’s kick drum and John Pedigo’s galloping banjo — the perfect choice for a front runner. In the midst of today’s folk revival, the duo’s raw energy and multi-tasking abilities seem to be the hook that keeps fans coming back.

With Young’s rolling bass vocals and Pedigo’s lofty chords, the opportunities for expansive styles and varied moods are endless. They flexed this strength with sweet tracks of love and heartbreak juxtaposed with rowdy numbers designed to kick in the door. In one of those romantic tracks, fittingly titled “Found The One,” Pedigo waits until the end to show off a fiery banjo solo worth waiting for. Same with “You Are The Light,” a slower track that proves there’s more to offer than spitfire pace. The lyrical presence rings true too, showing why it took so long to complete.

But the turning point comes towards the middle of the record on “Levee Breaks,” a pure, banjo-based song saturated with a wailing harmonica and intentional lyrics worthy of any mainstream folk artist. Without sacrificing their chirpy, happy-go-lucky persona, they have believably crossed over into a more emotional folk world that reflects their growth as artists.

Thunderdog comes out on iTunes on April 16, accompanied by an album release party on April 19 at the Granada Theater. Whether you’re a folk lover or not, Thunderdog shows that The O’s know how to have fun in the studio, making the record a party worth having.
