A Great Wild Mercy (Oct. 13, 2023) explores integration and living in process as we enter a post-pandemic era. The songs on this album address our personal and community longing for connection in this exhausted time marked by fear and rage. Carrie writes that she thinks of her songs as "three and a half minutes of empathy, a welcoming space where the news of the world and the news of the heart have equally important roles to play." The album expresses a deep desire to experience something life-giving and generative emerging out of relationships across differences. "Everything has brought us here," Newcomer says. "The good, the glorious, the hard as stone, the seriously stupid things that have happened. It has all mattered and helped us become the persons we are today. I've never written an album because I have an answer, I write only because I have questions. I write myself in to my next becoming." This luminous album features Newcomer’s trademark evocative and poetic lyrics, her signature alto voice dubbed as “rich as Godiva Chocolate” by The Austin American-Statesman, and lush arrangements fusing classical, folk, Americana and bluegrass influences. Contributing to the unique musical blend were bassist Paul Kowert (The Punch Brothers, Hawktail), celebrated guitarist and songwriter Jordan Tice (Hawktail), violinist Brittany Haas (Hawktail, Crooked Still, Dave Rollins Band), drummer/percussionist Jim Brock (Indigo Girls), vocalist Siri Undlin (Humbird) and Newcomer’s long- time touring companion and collaborator pianist Gary Walters.
