A double CD that brings together re-mastered and rediscovered gems from rare and original 78's with the best contemporary music influenced by 30's jazz age sounds. This is the very first compilation to bring these together and the UK's first ever Electro Swing CD. Compiled by Nick Hollywood of Freshly Squeezed, Club Montepulciano and Lost Vagueness fame (who pioneered the lounge scene) and DJ's El Nino and Lady Kamikazi of London's (award-winning) Black Cotton and Lady Luck clubs - the CD is put together by some of the true originators among DJs of the UK's burgeoning vintage club scene. Capturing a new zeitgeist, CD1 WHITE MINK brings together the best of today's artists like France's platinum-selling Caravan Palace (who will tour the UK in 2010), the nu-jazz star Parov Stelar, the UK's Jesse Rose and Austria's Waldeck with influential but hard-to-find early classics of the genre like "Princess Crocodile" by F.M. Einheit and Gry. CD2 BLACK COTTON is the fruit of many years crate-digging for rare 78's that have then been tried and tested on the Club's dance floor. Fresh originals by the likes of Django Reinhardt, Woody Herman and Benny Goodman combine with early vocal performances from undisputed legends like Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald. Second outing in the series that truly caught the zeitgeist and spawned a UK scene. Volume 1 was the first ever British electro swing release and launched an "exciting new genre" (Time Out) to became a top-ten download album, described as a "landmark moment" (Mixmag), "sublimely decadent" (Clash) and "perfect" (The Guardian). 2010 has since become the summer of electro swing with the hippest small stages (and even some of the main stages) at most festivals celebrating this new genre with bands, DJs or both. Many of these stages have even been programmed by us including Big Chill, Bestival and Glastonbury with additional monthly club nights in London and Brighton. Volume 2 repeats the same format as the first album containing contemporary electro swing on one CD (including 5 exclusive and previously unreleased cuts) while CD2 weighs in with more rare and classic re-mastered 1920s and 30s originals. As with the previous album-charting, silver-disc'd CDs, side one (White Mink) presents a diverse modern take, while the other side (Black Cotton) is all vintage. It is the latest, long-awaited, instalment in Freshly Squeezed's hugely succesful and highly influencial album series described as "Electro Swing's first landmark moment" by Mixmag. It is this series more than any other that was part of the van-guard of a global zeitgeist and that sets the gold standard for this new genre.
Compiled by label boss, DJ and world-wide radio host, Nick Hollywood, the first CD includes several exclusive tracks including a brand new remix of the Squirrel Nut Zippers, Kid Kasino (feat. Shea Soul) and Swing Republic not available anywhere else. CD 2 features 12 re-mastered classics from the prohibition-era's 78rpm jazz age and is dedicated to the memory of London's late DJ, El Nino.
Since the launch of our first volume, White Mink has become the worlds leading electro swing club event, described as "One hell of a turbo-charged party" (Time Out) and named the 2nd best party in the UK by Mixmag. We have presented numerous sell-out shows by the biggest names in the genre including Parov Stelar and Caravan Palace at venues such as London's O2 Shephards Bush Empire and KOKO with numerous large festival stages hosted from Glastonbury to Latitude, the Edinburugh Fringe to Love Supreme, Bestival to Boomtown.
