After their subtle and melancholic musical look into the past on the album Istanbul 1900, released in 2021, Erkin Cavus & Reentko Dirks Ütopya look into the future of the metropolis on the Bosporus. On the album they implement their visions of a transformation of urban traffic flows, generous renaturations, a new definition of public spaces in favor of non-commercial, neighborhood uses: Tree houses replace department stores, one hundred ping-pong tables replace the eternally long lines of cars on the Bosphorus Bridge, a public library is created in the airport, a crafts school in the former presidential palace, and a watercourse flows through the middle of the city where prestigious buildings previously dominated the cityscape. Musically, Ütopya also presents innovations, especially in the duo's characteristic sound and through some surprising encounters. Other facets tie in with its predecessor, released in 2021. Its delicate and atmospherically dense music delighted audiences and the press, and in some countries the duo even managed to conquer the charts. The most striking innovation in the music on Ütopya are guest musicians who pointedly enrich the detailed sound panorama. Other changes to the previous album are probably less noticeable, rhythmically there are some finesses to discover on the album. Structures are often broken in the course of a piece, the meters vary from 5/4 to 5/8 and 9/8 to 10/8. The video for the first single "Ütopya" makes a bow to the social background of the album. So that the music does not stand alone, but leads on to ideas and initiatives that you can get involved in and get in touch with people who have a similar idea of their future.
