We at AVID have been wondering... “do all music lovers of a “certain age” have fond memories of their mothers and a large box set of records by Jim Reeves loitering around the record deck threateningly, just waiting for Mum to have a “Jim moment?!” “And do we all secretly have fond memories of actually enjoying the music when Mum had one of her moments? (even though it meant not listening to the latest Beatles or Stones album for half an hour or so!!)” We know we did, and that’s why this Jim Reeves release is especially welcome here at AVID. He may not be solid country on all this music, but it is certainly all good music. To quote a line from the liner notes to “A Touch of Velvet”... “... finally there’s the music fan who doesn’t give a hoot what label you put him on, he goes out and buys what he likes. What he likes, more often than not, is a deep, rich baritone that falls as smoothly on the ear as the caress of velvet. If there is one word that describes the Jim Reeves singing style, that’s it... velvet.”
