Along with "Planet" recorded in 1971, two albums famous as DECCA recordings representing Mehta & Ross Philharmonic are compiled into one. "Zarathustra" was a monumental album in which Mehta's face photo was used as a close-up on the domestic album, and Mehta's name became famous for its rich tone and handsome features. In 1969, he won the Record Academy Award for Orchestral Music. The LP, which was cut with plenty of time at the time, was also heavily used as a demo for audio equipment, and it was an album that established an era in terms of audio, especially with the heavy organ sounding from the beginning. On the other hand, "The Rite of Spring" is an excellent recording at DECCA that ranks with Solti & Chicago Symphony Orchestra in the 70's, and is also a masterpiece that won the 1971 (9th) Record Academy Award for orchestral music. At that time, the achievement of making "The Rite of Spring" major, including the Boulez version, was great, and the meter's leadership ability, which was both sharp and heavy, was highly evaluated. There are reissues with the New York Philharmonic after each, but it can be said that the wonderful recording of DECCA, which is detailed but has a low center of gravity, has a great effect.
In this reissue, we aimed for a wide-ranging sound with a solid sound image by making the best use of the characteristics of the meter and loss fill. With DSD, the sound is smoother and richer with rich overtones. It does not have an American sound, but reproduces the very essential sound for him, which is rooted in the European-oriented balance and playing sense that Mehta originally aimed for. It's a great album with outstanding performances and recordings.
