If you were fed up with the surplus of Guy clones and Prince imitators plaguing the urban contemporary market in 1990, Kipper Jones presented an attractive alternative with Ordinary Story. This impressive release, which is best described as soul and funk with hip-hop influences, makes it clear that the talented but little-known singer wasn't interested in the type of formulaic, assembly-line approach that was all too common among urban contemporary artists at the time. From the driving funk of "Shock Wave" and "My House" to some smooth crooning on "Poor Elaine," "Consider Me Yours" and Jones' remake of the Isley Brothers' "Footsteps in the Dark," Ordinary Story is the work of someone who sounds like he wanted to help put the soul back into R&B. But Jones' excellence didn't pay off commercially, and Virgin ended up dropping him.
