Capella De Ministrers, Carles Magraner - Música Angélica (2006)

Cantigas, Mysteries and Songs in Praise of the Virgin Mary. This is an ambitious project arising from the discovery of twelve angel musicians on 15th century fresco paintings hidden below the baroque domes of the apse of the high altar of the Valencia cathedral. They were uncovered, analysed, restored and replicas of their instruments were built, and these are the instruments that can be heard in this referential work published in the collection dedicated to the Musical Heritage of Valencia by the Valencian Musical Institute.

The prolific Capella de Ministrers (Carles Magraner) shows with another new CD the sweet moment that is happening, the lucid hangover of the recent celebration of its XX anniversary. If in this same issue of the Bulletin you find out about your version of Dowland's Lachrimae, this off-road set gives us a disc specialized in Valencian musical heritage or related to this ancient kingdom of the Crown of Aragon, with a repertoire located between the 13th century and XVI. In case there was not sufficient thematic coherence, all the pieces are related, in one way or another, with the Virgin. A luxury program.

The germ of the compilation is an ambitious project devised from the discovery of twelve enormous and fantastic (in both senses of the word) musical angels, frescoed in the late fifteenth century, and hidden under the baroque vaults in the apse of the altar Mayor of the Valencian cathedral, strictly contemporary to the construction of the Lonja of the city, that late-Gothic landmark of civil architecture. It was decided to bring them to light, their analysis, restoration and, in the same way that was done at the time with the Romanesque instruments of the Portico de la Gloria of Compostela, we proceeded to the construction of the replicas of the same for the use of the Capella de Ministrers, which are the ones that sound on this CD.
But this is much more than an institutional disc, ephemeris. In fact, the novelty of part of the interpreted repertoire makes this album a rarity and a milestone for those interested in ancient Hispanic music, highlighting a superb interpretation of the Song of the Sibyl (according to the Breviary of Don Martin I of Aragon), alternating sober and choreographic, a Marian joy coming from a cantoral of a convent of Poor Clares, and an interesting collection of Assumptionist works, from Vic to Elche, from the 13th to the 16th century. Finally, a nod to a more trite repertoire: two Cantigas de Santa María by Alfonso X, of Valencian and Alicante themes, and two new versions of two pieces by Llibre Vermell montserratino, which has won so many successes for this group, make up the group.

The interpretation shows the breadth of records of the Capella, with magisterial moments, very inspired. Decidedly, the Valencians are already a reference in the translation of the medieval repertoire. If the CD comes with an extensive booklet with illustrations of the highest quality, and the notes to the program are written by Maricarmen Gómez Muntané ... what more can you ask for? Well another disc of the Capella. Seeing the last rhythm of work, and successes, will not be long in coming, neither one nor the other.
