Wilhelm Kempff (1895-1991), a great German pianist, came to Japan in October 1961 and performed all Beethoven's piano sonatas for seven consecutive nights. It was said to be the first time in Japan that a single pianist performed all of Beethoven's piano sonatas intensively.
Kemp was 66 at the time. Beethoven's complete piano sonatas have two types of session recordings, monaural from 1950-6 and stereo from 1964-5, both of which are excellent masterpieces, but the complete works of Kemp's peak in the middle period are already available. The fact that there was one was astonishing. All of them were recorded by NHK for radio broadcasting, and the best technology at that time was used. Kemp is a pianist who shows his best in live performances, so it can be said that this is a treasure trove of piano music history.
Each time, he becomes freer and more eloquent, and in his later works, he reaches a state that cannot be considered human. The encore that was played every time is also included.
