A recording of a one-off session with the Leipzig Gewandhausorchester and Schallplatten in Germany in 1973. Speaking of Markewicz's "Pictures at an Exhibition", the sharp 1953 edition of DG with the Berliner Philharmoniker and the 1983 live performance when he performed with the NHK Symphony Orchestra in his last years. After all, it is this 60-year-old board that symbolizes genius. While based on the heavy sound of a traditional orchestra, the timbre with shadows that is slightly different from Ravel's original color sense makes the listener feel closer to Mussorgsky's natural style. In particular, the deep reading of the score, including the contrast between the depth of "Old Castle", "Buidro", and "Catacomb" and the parts where high instruments such as trumpets play an active part, is unique to Markevich. Since its release, you can nod that it is one of Markevich's representative recordings. On conventional CDs, the performance tends to be buried in a sober sound, but when you listen to the latest reprint from the original analog master tape in your home country, you will understand why Markevich left this recording with LGO. I feel like I can see part of the reason. Mr. Stickel's ability to obediently bring out the sound left in the master, and the environment where the tape was stored in good condition, must be a sound source that should be listened to with high sound quality. Also, "Hageyama no Ichiya" is overwhelmed by its authenticity that pulls out the expressions hidden in the original song while avoiding flashiness.

The coupling song "Uguisu no Uta" was recorded in 1983, and is a detailed and calm performance that is typical of Kegel's later years. Like other Stravinsky recordings, I am amazed at the unique facial expressions, probably because I feel Kegel's terrifying realism. Compared to the somewhat folkloric first half of this album, the origins and background of the songs are significantly different, but please enjoy the contrast between the original sophistication of the songs and the performance of the former East Germany.
