Although Heifetz’s art has been abundantly well served in the CD era, nothing quite compares to Sony/BMG’s imposing 103-disc set Jascha Heifetz: The Complete Album Collection. It contains all of the violinist’s issued RCA and HMV recordings, his valedictory 1972 concert issued by Columbia Masterworks, three discs’ worth of unreleased studio recordings, a bonus DVD featuring the 1970 Bell Telephone Hour television special, and a 312-page hard-cover book. The contents encompass much of the core violin repertoire, a wide range of chamber works, more contemporary music (albeit on the conservative side) than you’d think, plus encore-type showpieces and transcriptions.

Just about any recording by Jascha Heifetz testifies to his eminence as the most influential violinist of his time. His effortless virtuosity, spot-on intonation, pure yet intense tone, instantly identifiable vibrato, and expressive economy were the gold standard to which modern violinists continue to aspire. He single-handedly transformed the 20th century violin repertoire, ensuring the survival of works that we nowadays take for granted (the Sibelius concerto), while inspiring and recording new pieces by composers ranging from Korngold to Walton. He retained his matchless technique to the end of his career. Always a perfectionist, when he felt he could no longer maintain the highest standards, he retired. Some listeners continue to find him a cold interpreter, but his uniqueness and force of personality are never in doubt.

The set’s individual volumes are organized according to chronological LP release and are housed in facsimile jackets that replicate the original cover art. This often yields less-than-convenient musical programming. For example, you won’t find the 1952 Bach Sonatas and Partitas grouped together, but rather on three separate discs (Volumes 37, 42, and 50), in order of original LP catalog listing. The Beethoven Sonatas are similarly spread out. Fortunately, the volumes are cross-indexed in a handy discography that lists everything both by composer and recording session order. Furthermore, intelligence and common sense govern producer Robert Russ’ mandate to maintain “original jacket” programmatic consistency while avoiding excessive duplication of material. At the same time, Russ finds logical couplings for the handful of items that never managed to find their way onto Heifetz LPs.

The main question for collectors probably will concern sound quality. According to the booklet credits, Discs 1 through 98 are newly mastered. Comparsions with RCA’s mid-‘90s complete Heifetz edition reveal the present transfers to have a slight increase of amplitude, a little more definition in register extremes, plus more noticeable room tone and tape hiss. The HMV shellac sessions also boast more dynamic range, presence, and bloom here than in the quieter yet less vibrant transfers for EMI’s Icons series. Taking Sony/BMG’s excellent production values and cost per disc into consideration, the Heifetz Complete Album Collection adds up to a modest, time-tested investment for serious music lovers and violin mavens that will yield bountiful listening dividends for years to come. Get it while you can.
