Letting oneself being carried away by its sounds, it’s easier to enjoy this album’s high peaks of energy, thanks to the solidity of the rhythm section that includes Ettore Fioravanti and Jacopo Ferrazza, and thanks to the high-altitude twist and turns of Daniela Spalletta’s and Rosario Giuliani’s melodies. These incredible musicians trusted these ideas, and made this music reach an undreamed of level at the time it was conceived. Thus the biggest thanks go to them. This project is an experience of different traditions that interlaced with my musical exploration, some closer to my roots, some further, but all with a strong connection to my research:
From rhythms of Afro-Cuban inspiration, to Multi-Dimensional Geometry, to the discovery in Southern France of the most beautiful painted caves in the world, and finally getting back home to the Mediterranean Sea. The Suite reinspects the ongoing tragedies in the Mediterranean Sea through the lens of our cultural roots.
The first movement, Seikilos’ Epitaph (in the version I worked out) is the most ancient melody of the Western world ever discovered. This has been the most emotional recording and difficult to make in studio. It was extraordinarily sung by Daniela Spalletta in Ancient Greek, Turkish, and Arabic. This movement inescapably leads into an Italian Song, the second movement, that narrates the Mediterranean, and its lyrics feature some very intense and meaningful nuggets.
Hermes is named after the messenger of the gods, because anybody who produces Art is a messenger — and has the task to seek for a unique and personal message within oneself, and to delivery it in the best possible way. A composition based upon the “Elastic" properties of Meter, leads to the title track: Hold Fast, a call to cling to the first element that strikes the listener, letting it lead the understanding of what’s less immediate in this album.
Without neglecting the other meanings of Hold Fast which are to persevere, to embrace one’s own principles, and values. This is what steadily guided the production of this project: the realization of the principles of freshness, sincerity, and beauty.
