Lovers of classic Mexican vocal trios will find a lot to admire about Songs of Mexico, which finds veteran singer Carlos Hernandez (b. 1923, Michoacan, Mexico) and his group los Trovadores turning their attention to a variety of familiar Mexican songs. Those who have attended traditional Mexican gatherings will recognize most of the material, which ranges from the famous "Cielito Lindo" and the 19th century classic "La Zandunga" to favorites written in the 1930s (Pepe Guizar's "Guadalajara"), the 1950s (Tomás Méndez's "Cu-Cu-Rru-Cu-Cu Paloma," Jose Alfredo Jiménez's "Qué Bonito Amor"), and the 1960s (Ruben Fuente's "La Bikina"). Some of the songs are well known outside of Mexican circles -- most notably, Consuelo Velazquez's haunting "Besame Mucho" and Alberto Dominguez's charming "Perfidia," both of which have been recorded by numerous jazz artists. A few of the selections were written by non-Mexican composers, including Cuban composer Carlos Farres' "Quizás, Quizás, Quizás" and Panamanian composer Carlos Almaran's "Historia de un Amor." But they're perfect choices for this CD because they're popular among Mexicans. Throughout the session, Chavez displays the type of soulful charisma one expects from him, and the singer has fine harmonic support from Trovadores Jess de la Rosa (b. 1930, Mexico City, Mexico) and Luis Miranda (b. 1934, Guadalajara, Mexico). Songs of Mexico is a gem.
