Vacant Church is an indie quartet that blends folk, rock, psych, and pop. Michael Madden plays guitar and sings. Glenn Fung plays bass. Donald Curtis plays guitar. Tim Gruber plays drums.
Written by Michael Madden, the songs feel friendly, melodic, and have a sense of gentle comfort. The lyrics cover an incredibly deep range of emotion and struggle reflective of this time on planet Earth. Madden has a very personal, introspective lyrical style that speaks of sadness and transformation. Madden does not present answers, but rather the real questions that haunt us all. One would think this makes for a morose body of work, and while his deep vocal begins with a dreamy sadness, somehow the music wraps around the style to give it a longing and hopeful feel. The term Saudade comes to mind, defined as ‘ a deep emotional state of nostalgic or profound longing…’. This is a Portugeses term, and can only come from a culture close to the sea, where melancholy and nostalgia are most closely connected. The ocean is the defining characteristic of our planet, and Madden is digging into this core feeling throughout the album.
While Stabilizer brings to mind 20th century Americana classics, it is clearly of this century. One is reminded of many artists who have gone before; Nick Drake, The Flaming Lips, Beck, The Velvet Underground. Each of these artists marked a shift in the style of basic songs, and Vacant Church pulls off the same futuristic feel while firmly rooting the songs in the tradition.
