For many years now, Laura B has been at the very top of the R&B tree as a vocalist, and with the assemblage of top drawer musicians around her, the sound has been full bodied and first class. This latest CD recording from her, it seems so long since ‘Jump and Shout’, is eye catchingly packaged in black, white and gold with atmospheric photography and artwork.

Recorded at Shack Studio in God’s own county of Essex, and released on Shack Records, the title track ‘While The Going’s Good’ is the opening corker. If you have seen this combo perform on the many stages around the country and indeed Europe, you can immediately picture them all in perfect synchronisation on this bouncy slice of Rhythm and Blues. It’s got dance floor stamped all over it, and like many on the CD, has Laura B as it's composer.

‘Got Me Working Hard For You’ is a worthy follow on, with a catchy drum beat from Paul Richardson and exquisite fret work by Chris Corcoran. Slowing the pace down somewhat is ‘Your Wicked Games’, a beauty of a blues number, the lyrics of which centre around cheating and infidelity and are tinged with sadness, set to a late night club sound. If sound were colours, this would be set in sepia. Superb.

We’re back shuffling again with ‘Ready For Love’, a more upbeat and optimistic original number, with some good backing harmonies. From there, it’s a gritty blues guitar and harmonica to start ‘Beware Sisters Beware’. The vocals begin low and gradually build up throughout, setting up a wail-tastic harmonica solo from Steve Weston. First class blues.

‘Louella’ is the first of the covers, set to a brilliant boogie woogie style piano beat. Recorded, and indeed written by pianist Marcia Ball, this version is true to her original, and is up there with the best on the CD, not that you could fit a cigarette paper between them! I defy you listeners and dancers not to be wholly captivated by this one.

It’s back to ‘B' originals again with the pacey blues bouncer ‘Baby, Please Come Home’, which is a real foot stomper of a tune, with Laura’s voice perfectly pitched over it. By complete contrast, it’s smoochy time, with ‘Guide Me Home’, and another great vocal performance with backing harmonies almost giving it a Gospel sound. The jumping sound of ‘My Man’s Loving Me’ is a classic jump jive blues sound with excellent horn work from Pete Cook, Big Al Bland and Barry Few, complemented by more ace guitar work.

Another dimension to the playlist is evident in ‘Hooked’, employing the organ sound to good effect. Etta James’ W.O.M.A.N. is given the Laura B treatment expertly. This is a monumental song to take on and she does it with considerable aplomb. Rounding off the CD is ‘Rock House’, a real barn burner of a song that will leave you breathless.

When an artist’s latest record release is as anticipated as this is, the expectation can sometimes lead to anticlimax. Not so with Laura B and her Band. The lyrics are well crafted and vocally perfectly delivered, the contribution of the accompanying musicians is something that cannot be understated.
