Christian Muthspiel will celebrate his 60th birthday in 2022. To mark the occasion, Universal Music Austria is releasing his album "Homecoming".
Large ensembles in jazz have become rare. Due in part to the decline in fees over the past decade, a culture that helped shape the history of one of the greatest musical inventions of the 20th century is being lost: From Duke Ellington to Carla Bley, from the Sun Ra Arkestra to the Vienna Art Orchestra, large-capacity bands have always been part of the canon of improvised music. With the 18-piece Orjazztra Vienna, Christian Muthspiel - ignoring the march of time - is now fulfilling the dream of his own jazz orchestra, which he has had since leaving the Vienna Art Orchestra in 2004
In the recordings from March 2021, in the midst of the COVID pandemic, one quickly senses that this inspired large ensemble was able to unfold enormous liveliness even in the rare setting of "Live at Porgy & Bess WITHOUT an audience" and how much energy on the one hand and delicate islands of sound on the other are possible.
