Ethel Ennis avait tout pour devenir une diva. Elle s’est produite dans les endroits les plus prestigieux. Les revues spécialisées la plaçaient régulièrement en tête de leurs classements et ses collègues l’admiraient : Joe Williams l’appelait sa « Little Sister », Frank Sinatra la désignait comme son type de chanteuse, Ella Fitzgerald et Billie Holiday ne tarissaient pas d’éloges sur son compte. Une carrière internationale semblait s’ouvrir sous ses pas. Pourtant, Ethel Ennis n’a pas connu une renommée à la hauteur son talent. Sa production discographique n’excède pas onze albums et quelques singles. Les raisons de cet état de choses ne sont pas d’ordre artistique : Ethel Ennis n’a jamais désiré devenir une star, ou plutôt vivre la vie d’une star avec ses contraintes, ses dérives et ses dangers qu’elle avait très bien évalués. Aux paillettes trompeuses du monde du spectacle, elle a préféré les vraies valeurs artistiques et le bonheur simple d’une vie personnelle conforme à ses aspirations. L’histoire d’une anti-star.
