The term “ragtime” is generally considered to be a contraction of “ragged time”, referring to a style of playing in which the melody is broken up into short, syncopated rhythms (right hand), played against a steadily accented bass accompaniment. An article in the Times of London states: “In American slang to ‘rag’ a melody means to syncopate a normally regular tune.”1 Syncopation is the “nucleus” of ragtime. Furthermore, ragtime has always been associated with dancing, and the dances named on the earliest ragtime sheet music are the cakewalk, march and two-step.

Regarded as one of the foundations of jazz, ragtime developed in the 1890s in African American communities throughout the southern Midwest, especially in Missouri. From Sedalia, Missouri – the “Cradle of Classic Ragtime” – it spread out to St Louis, up to Chicago, then to the east and west coasts. But there was an aural history of ragtime reaching back much further in the century, maybe to a time when black slaves fused European harmony with African rhythms.
