By itself, the stunning "El Primero" (which features Pete "Conde" Rodriguez, Ismael Miranda and Adalberto Santiago on lead vocals) should make this CD a must-have for any serious fan of Salsa music. Despite having been released on the multi-national Sony label this CD is not a commercial Salsa release as it has much more in common with 1970s Salsa than with anything released during the past three decades but it by no means sounds dated. The fact that Larry Harlow brought in many of the 1970s Salsa scene's musicians undoubtedly gave this Salsa masterpiece a strong 1970s flavor but (as a whole) this CD manages to incorporate the best of both 1970s Salsa and the best of contemporary "Salsa Dura" and Latin Jazz and (as such) it sounds both classic and contemporary.
