It's absolutely incomprehensible that you keep distributing the 16bit44 first and then, a day later, the high-res. complete nonsense!!!!!

Jansons is the only conductor I know of who adds extra timpani to the score in Ein Heldenleben. I don't remember a time when he didn't do this - even an off-air LSO broadcast from 1990 has them. I don't necessarily find the addition at M.93 before the Im zeitmass marking a problem - it even works. Timp at the end... well that changes a lot (although Strauss did write two endings I think).

Nevertheless, doesn't change my view that Jansons grew into being, right up until his death, the finest Strauss conductor of his generation (had Sinopoli not died so young well.... )I don't think the rehearsals will give much insight into why Jansons plays Heldenleben this way.

1st one ends quietly, rare, Sawallisch & Philadelphia Orchestra and so on
