The 70th birthday of Richard von Weizsäcker, a major political figure of Germany, then president of the federal republic, was celebrated in April 1990. On this special occasion, a concert was held in Cologne under the baton of Israeli conductor Gary Bertini, then principal director of the local radio orchestra. The program included Webern’s Im Sommerwind, the suite from The Firebird, and Mozart’s fourth violin concerto with the young but already acclaimed soloist Frank Peter Zimmermann.
