The company was incorporated in Detroit on January 12, 1959 under the name Tamla Records. A couple of years later, the name was changed to “Motown” - an abbreviation for “Motor Town” (literally, “the city of motors”) - as Detroit is commonly called, the center of the US auto industry.
Motown Records (Motown Records) is an American record company, currently part of the Universal Music Group. As the first record label created by African American Berry Gordy, Motown-Tamla specialized in promoting black artists to the mainstream of world pop music. In the 1960s, a special direction of rhythm-and-blues was developed here - the so-called “Motown Sound”.
