Herbert Blomstedt

Blomstedt proves to be an excellent interpreter of the 4th Symphony. Crucially he sets judicious tempi and then allows the musicians to play (gloriously) without unnecessary interference. So the music unfolds naturally, beautifully, and inexorably towards the last movement's great Passacaglia. The recording is warm, truthful, very beautiful, but needs to be played at a rather higher volume than usual, in order to produce proper impact. A very real pleasure - it is remarkable how under-rated this performance is, despite its very high credentials. I would compare it very favourably with Carlos Kleiber's justly famous DG performance, though the Blomstedt has greater humanity to my mind. The other works are very well done too.
