Robin Trower - Coming Closer to the Day (2019) LP

He has nothing to prove to anybody and he knows it. His playing is all tone and phrasing with gorgeous melodies while the sparse lyrics of course are about mortality: “stop counting every step and be free”, he sings on the title track.

Trower also plays the bass himself on the album, Chris Taggart on drums is the only other musician.

Although all tunes are mid-tempo blues based songs, the rich guitar work makes each of them interesting. Yes, he has done similar albums throughout his career but at 74 he knows how to capture the listener nonetheless.
