High grade, obscure club digs from Morocco via Paris, 1989, shedding light on Hassan Ideddir’s killer, authentically exotic takes on new beat and electro/Italo-disco paradigms
A very smart example of stylistic double refraction in action, the four tracks on ‘Atfalouna’ see Ideddir reclaim the exotic orientalism so rife in new beat and certain strands of late ‘80s club music, by doing the style with authentic vocals and wavey microtonal melodies during its late apex years. Somehow broadly by-passing the attention of most until now, Ideddir’s small but killer catalogue is here highlighted to the wider world with cherry-picked cuts from his sole single and an album issued on CD-ROM, both originally recorded and released in 1989.
Let us be frank; we’re fucking all over this one, pushing all our buttons for late ‘80s sleaze, microtonal melody and disco drama in one big dopamine hit. From the top, his single ‘Atfalouna’ is a proper peach, built with plangent muezzin calls, flashing string stabs, crowd noise and sexiest new beat swang to underline Ideddir’s soulful croon, also included as a stripped version for those who want to relish its midi crispness. From his album, there’s also the calmer strut of ‘Ibini’ with its Kraftwerkian arps and romantic strings, but the other big one is ‘Ydouchababe’, ramping the ante with dramatic horn section before locking into a groove like a lusher echo of Tanki Tanki funked up with added gallic swagger.
