The existence of the piano sonatas in Mendelssohn’s catalogue is hidden to such a degree that most musico-graphers do not even mention them; there is one exception a historian of the sonata who concluded by remarking on the subject of the opus 6 that ‘in spite of the prodigious ease with which he composed, Mendelssohn did not portray any particular quality’. The peremptory character of such a judgement encourages us to revise this opinion. In fact everything seems to be intended to deter us from Mendelssohn’s piano sonatas: the years of their composition have remained uncertain until now, the numbering has been misleading or else there have been no numbers at all, and the publication was posthumous and incomplete. Lastly the fact that Beethoven, Schubert and Weber are placed arbitrarily in front of Mendelssohn seems to reduce his contribution to nothing.
