Psychedelic Art Folk from Norway & Finland (-a blend of the north, finnish, norwegian and sámi soul)
Maras is an artistic musical project from Norway and Finland consisting of musicians, visual and performing artists led by Marita Isobel Solberg from Manndalen, living in Tromsø, Norway. In 2018 she gathered a group of her best friends and musical collaborators for a studio session, to record composed material, but mainly to create new songs for an album - directly in the studio. Not only as a work of music, but also as an experiment of presence and communication between musicians and as a work of performance art. Eventually it will unfold to a bigger work consisting of several artistic elements.
As a part of M A R A S are:
Marita Isobel Solberg, artist and musician known from Mara & The Inner Strangeness, Strange Mara & The Sound, living in Tromsø, Norway
Risto Puurunen, also known through his band Cleaning Women and artistic works including 3d shadows. Living in Juotsa and Helsinki, Finland
Stig Pettersen, percussionist and drummer known for his work with several of my projects including Mara & The Inner Strangeness, he is also working with Carlos Jeldes and Anna Kaisa Räisänen
Erik Nilsson, plays keys, organ and piano. Known for his work with several bandprojects like The Northern Lies and The Late Great. and guest musician Håvard Lund on Bass Clarinet
Here is a little story about
It all started with the urge to dive deeper into the mysteries of the earth; eachother, family, land, animals, plants, trees, water, crystals, stones and other elements. From the bigger to the smallest parts. Reflecting how our mind works and how our dreams are connected to this all.
How are dreams made? How can vibrations and sounds from the earth and the universe affect us? If trees can talk, how can we listen to what they say?
In the lyrics I focus on personal stories to search the collective.
States of water are one of the layers - snow, Ice, steam, lake, oceans, rivers, rain, - Who are we- who are you? Another layer is history through eyes of the past, present and future. We dive into symbols, metaphors and rituals. We gather strength. We intend to create a space for mind expanding personal travels, to open up, to dream, to help soothe pain or restlessness.
At our session in Kysten Studio in Tromsø we made a trilogy, and the first song from the first album just had its premiere with a music video made by the bioartist and filmmaker Trond Ansten. The pictures are all shot in twilight on a bug close to Tromsø, through 3 different seasons and form a visual poem as much as a musical poem.
The premiere has happened in Taipei, Tromsø, Rovaniemi, Juotsa, Kingston and New York City.
Until October 2021, 5 different music videos or art films will be presented, made by different artists.
Dear Snow is written on a two weeks hike at the Kvænangen Mountains - during springtime. At a time when winter is fading, but there is still ice and snow left on the ground. Passing rivers and lakes hoping that everything holds the weight, the body, mind and land. Asking for collaboration. Asking to take me on the right path.
October 2021 the album WHERE WHALES GO will be out worldwide through Strange Mara Recordings.
