Gaechinger Cantorey & Hans-Christoph Rademann - J.S. Bach: Magnificat, BWV 243 - C.P.E. Bach: Magnificat, Wq. 215 (2022) [Hi-Res]

Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach held the art of his father Johann Sebastian in the highest esteem. However, this did not prevent him from going his own way. Even when Carl Philipp Emanuel positioned himself as Johann Sebastian's successor for the Thomaskantorat, he did not reverently demonstrate his artistic affinity to his father, but rather accentuated his compositional independence in one of his first choral works and confidently presented himself with a Magnificat. In Leipzig, this inevitably exposed him to direct comparison with his father, who, at the age of 38, as the newly appointed Thomaskantor, had also presented a Magnificat as his first major work on 2 July 1723. To this day, Carl Philipp Emanuel's Magnificat is measured against that of his father.

In December 2020, the choir and orchestra of the Gaechinger Cantorey, under the musical direction of Hans-Christoph Rademann, together with an excellent ensemble of soloists, performed both of these magnificent works in concert - unfortunately to an empty hall, but the audience was there via livestream and is now up close and personal via this extraordinary CD release.
