Oregon’s 1975 poet laureate, William Stafford, wrote that our lives are defined by our hold on a “thread” that we follow, never letting go of the tragedies, losses, deaths, and suffering that the thread leads us through.
Following in Stafford’s Oregonian footsteps, Rich Swanger leads his group, The Little Known Band, through a folk-inspired tradition of tugging on this thread. Their newest album, These Hands, was recorded during the tragedy-laden first years of the pandemic decade. The themes of these two years have been dark, indeed, for most of us. We’ve all been forced— willingly or not—to ask ourselves what the purpose of this thread is, if all it leads to is dismay and heartache for life as we knew it. How best to hold that thread, and when to pull back or give it slack.
Stafford writes that “People wonder about what you are pursuing” by holding the thread. During the pandemic, we wonder what ends could possibly justify so much confusion, ignorance, and frustration. The underlying paradox informs many of the songs on These Hands. By embracing the paradox of living freely yet safely, openly yet guarded, excited yet unsure; These Hands fills its lungs with the hope the paradox can help us all live more truthfully and move through the world with more confidence than ever before.
