Franz Liszt's 80 or so songs are somewhat overshadowed by his virtuoso piano works, his symphonic poems and, interestingly, his transcriptions and paraphrases of works by other composers, including 60 Schubert songs alone. Liszt's own songs take French, Italian and Hungarian influences, and in their highly sophisticated elaboration are designed for the concert hall rather than the salon. The Hungarian soprano Monika Lukács masterfully meets the demands of the voice, as does her partner, the Italian pianist Stefano Ligoratti, the extremely refined piano part.
