Petersen Quartet

The history of the string quartet in effect began with these cheerful, compact Divertimenti aquattro, as the composer titled them; and though they contain only spasmodic hints of future glories, their freshness and exuberance make for highly pleasurable listening.
The Petersen Quartet responds vividly to the music's youthful verve, with polished ensemble, keen attack and a wide spectrum of colour and dynamics. Purists may raise an eyebrow at the special effects the players deploy in repeats, especially in minuets – added touches of imitation, pizzicato and even col legno. But the young Haydn, famed for his mischievous humour, may have enjoyed these liberties. The recording combines clarity with an attractive church resonance.
