This disc has a sound quality that takes you back to the times when Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys ruled, when the plains were swept by dust storms and people gathered at dances and revivals for comfort. There is a timeless flow to this music that is both old in ways that spark memories of the warmth and comfort of the known and at the same time fresh, and vital, bursting with life. Ms Divine's voice is warm like a good blaze in the fireplace on a cold snowy winter night. It is a flowing and rich sound enhanced with full harmonies and excellent and tight songwriting. The musicians backing her are superb and in full touch with her vision, and support this effort of hers fully. Most of these musicians are well established in their own right. Engineer and co-producer, fiddler Dirk Powell (Dirk Powell Band, Balfa Toujours) has a number of his own releases, has recorded with the likes of Jack White, Loretta Lynn, and Sting, and also picks up the accordion, banjo, piano, guitar and vocals on this album. David Egan (File) also handles piano, and the Red Stick Ramblers contribute three members: fiddle-master Kevin Wimmer, Eric Frey on upright bass, and Glenn Fields on drums. Chris Stafford and Chris Segura of Feufollet also add guitar and fiddle work, respectively.
These musicians all live in the fertile Lafayette, LA area—a scene that is full and rich in the Cajun tradition, and yet near the borders of the plains of western Louisiana and its rich cowboy tradition. The multitalented Divine (a writer, documentary filmmaker, jingle composer for an ad agency) has embraced the sound of Bob Wills and enlisted the help of fellow musician friends from the Lafayette area. It is music that will warm your heart, make you tap your feet, and dust off the ancient treasures from out of the hidden recesses of our mind, bringing back the sounds of a far more comforting time.
