Howard Gladstone’s Concord Session is a “hybrid folk” album that holds a mirror up to human nature, in the age of environmental and humanitarian crisis, and a future we have limited time to shape.
It was recorded live on the studio floor by songwriter Howard Gladstone and guitar/bass/drum trio in 2017 but released in October 2021. It is an audiophile quality 192kHz/24-bit recording, engineered, mixed, and mastered by Peter J. Moore.
Three years after suffering a spinal cord injury, I recovered sufficiently to write the songs and record the album Hourglass. This is an album focused on healing.
Immediately upon finishing Hourglass, I asked the same musical crew to return to Peter J. Moore’s Concord Avenue studio the following week, and we recorded the tracks being released as the Concord Sessions.
These songs take a small step back from the mostly personal to focus on the broader picture of where we humans are at collectively as a species. Looking in the mirror reveals many sides of our human nature, our strengths, weaknesses, even foibles. There are themes such as activism and protest, the environmental crisis, human nature, history, forced migration and the plight of refugees. First and foremost, these are songs, and I have strived to create melodic and musical aural treats as well as explore meaningful themes. It’s a delicate balance.
What you hear is how it went down and sounded in the studio over the two-day recording period. There are no overdubs. The only thing that was added were background vocals. It’s recorded in high resolution audio so every nuance and wrinkle is audible.
