A wholly persuasive set of performances of those works by Bach that can reasonably be called oboe concertos, this 2007 Berlin Classics disc featuring oboist Burkhard Glaetzner as both soloist and director of the Mitteldeutscher Bach Konvent will instantly fill a hole in nearly every collection. The usual works are here - the Oboe Concerto in G minor, BWV 1056; the Oboe d'amore Concerto in A major, BWV 1055; and the Oboe and Violin Concerto in C minor, BWV 1060 - as well as an adaptation, a transcription, and a fragment - the Concerto in F major, BWV 169/49; the Concerto in G minor, BWV 1058, after BWV 1041; and a movement in G minor, BWV 1056, from a lost concerto. Glaetzner has a reedy but pliant and surprisingly rich tone, and an expressive if occasionally flashy technique; his interpretations here are sprightly and warmhearted. The Mitteldeutscher Konvent is a small but alert ensemble that follows Glaetzner's direction with amazing dexterity and complete sympathy. Berlin Classics' digital sound is full, deep, and round.
